Foreign media reported on June 27 that three communities located in Salamanca high valley of Chile are still in conflict with Los pelanblas copper mine under Antofagasta.
The protest started nearly a month ago. The accident on May 31 involved the pressure drop of the copper concentrate transportation system of the copper mine and the leakage of copper concentrate in Salamanca District 38 and 39 kilometers away from the town of llimpo.
Earlier last week, under the regulation of the government, three communities (Jorquera, coir ó N and Punta Nueva) reached a compensation agreement with the Los pelambras copper mine, and then lifted the blockade of the copper mine. However, the other three nearby communities (tranquilla, Batuco and cuncum é n communities) are still in a state of confrontation with the mining side.
According to local media, Reuben, the representative of the president of Chile? Quezada and district governor Crist? Naranjo’s mediation attempt failed, and community leaders are holding public meetings in the blockaded area.
In mid June, Los pelambras copper mine said that the protesters’ roadblocks hindered the normal traffic in and out of chacay operation site, which seriously interfered with the cleaning and maintenance of copper concentrate pipelines and the flow of workers and materials. This in turn led to the dismissal of more than 50 companies and 1000 workers. These events led Antofagasta to announce that the annual copper production in 2022 will be at the bottom of the expected range of 660000-690000 tons.
